STORY 1: Lady Dogs Continue Race to State Softball Title
Morgan County High School Lady Dogs had a strong start in the Class AAA Softball State Championships, with dominant wins over Dougherty (15-0) and Cavalry Day (8-0). They were set to host two more games on October 17. Coach Chad Pigg credits their success to attention to detail. The team played flawlessly in the field, not committing any errors. They played for each other and demonstrated teamwork. Key moments included early runs and a strong pitching performance by Ryleigh Hilsman. Anna Kate Hill and others contributed with hits and stolen bases, and they ended one game with the run rule. Coach Pigg emphasized the need to maintain focus and not underestimate their opponents. The community supports their journey to the Championships in Columbus, Georgia from October 25-28.
STORY 2: Newton County School System Earns ‘College and Career Academy of the Year’
The Newton County College and Career Academy (NCCA) in Georgia has been honored as the "College and Career Academy of the Year" for 2023 by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). The achievement was praised by Governor Brian Kemp for NCCA's outstanding contributions to students' success. The award recognizes NCCA's excellence in academic achievements, workforce development, industry collaborations, and community engagement. NCCA, established in 2012, serves 899 students and works in partnership with local businesses, technical colleges, and universities to prepare graduates for the local workforce. The academy offers 16 Advanced Placement courses and has the largest selection of Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education pathways in the Newton County School System. NCCA's Principal Chad Walker and interim superintendent of schools, Benjamin Roundtree, expressed pride in the academy's dedication and resilience.
STORY 3: Rockdale County BOC Recognizes Local Firefighters Courageous Battle Against Childhood Cancer
Sgt. Archie Collins of the Rockdale County Fire and Rescue team has a remarkable story of courage and resilience. Diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 12, he found strength in his family and the care provided by St. Jude's Hospital. After successfully battling cancer, he was inspired to become a firefighter and EMT to be someone else's hero. In a recent ceremony, the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners honored Collins for his journey and commitment. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant and recognized for his role as an inspiration to children and others facing similar challenges. His story serves as a reminder that those who wear uniforms for service often have inspiring stories of their own. Collins expressed gratitude and a desire to continue serving and being a hero to others.

Story 4: Flawed Ballot Discovered in Covington Mayoral Race
During the first day of advance voting in the Covington municipal election, some voters in the East Ward district found that the mayoral race was omitted from their ballots. The ballots available at the Oxford City Hall polling location did not include the mayoral candidates' names, which could potentially impact the outcome of the election. Newton County officials have acknowledged the issue and are working to rectify it. They plan to correct the electronic ballot at the end of the week in time for the next week's advance voting session and the General Election on November 7. The Covington municipal election includes several City Council races and the mayoral election, with five candidates in the mayoral race.
Story 5: Buckhead Lays Out Projected Use of SPLOST Funds
The Buckhead Town Council has prioritized a project list for funding through the Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) at the request of the Morgan County Board of Commissioners. The list, which is expected to be funded by $450,000 in revenue generated through SPLOST, includes support for the town's aging water system, capital improvement projects for town properties and buildings, the purchase and funding of maintenance equipment, and the purchase and funding of recreation equipment and space. Morgan County aims to renew the SPLOST through a county-wide referendum election on March 12, generating an estimated $46.6 million over seven years. Buckhead is projected to receive 0.97 percent of the tax proceeds. The council is expected to compile the project list by November 2.
