STORY 2: grants
Newton County has raised the maximum grant amount for its Low Income Senior Home Repair Program. Eligible seniors can now apply for up to $30,000 in funding for home repairs, with applications being accepted until July 31. The Board of Commissioners approved the increase from the previous limit of $15,000, focusing on critical repairs such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. The funds can be used for various projects like roof repairs, window replacements, and wheelchair ramp installations. Applicants must provide two quotes from licensed contractors. The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, has already received registrations from around 400 seniors. Application assistance is available online and at designated in-person locations..….get more info on this at rockdalenewtoncitizen.com
Story 3 : dangerous
New data reveals that Georgia's roads remain dangerous for motorists, with a higher fatality rate than pre-COVID-19. Although there was a decrease in the number of fatalities and the fatality rate between 2021 and 2022, it still remains higher than before the pandemic. Over the period of 2019 to 2022, traffic fatalities in Georgia increased by 19.7%, despite a 4% decrease in vehicle miles traveled. Reckless driving behaviors have been observed following the pandemic, possibly due to the changed driving patterns and behaviors caused by the public health emergency. Risky behaviors like drowsy driving, red-light running, speeding, and impaired driving have been on the rise, as reported by a study conducted by AAA. While additional legislation is uncertain, promoting kindness and modeling desired behavior are suggested as ways to address the issue. The backlog in legal proceedings and reduced accountability due to the COVID-19 situation may also contribute to the problem……….……We’ll be right back

Story 4: travel
AAA predicts that a record number of Georgians will travel for Independence Day, with over 1.6 million residents planning trips of 50 miles or more. Nationally, approximately 50.7 million Americans are expected to travel during the holiday weekend, setting a new record. Road trips are the preferred mode of travel, with 85% of all travelers opting for driving. Over 43.2 million Americans are projected to drive to their destinations, and in Georgia, more than 1.4 million individuals are forecasted to take a road trip. Air travel is also on the rise, with a record-setting 4.17 million Americans planning to fly. Other transportation modes, such as buses, cruises, and trains, are expected to see a 24% increase in travelers compared to last year. Travelers should anticipate congested roads, busy hotels, and long lines at airports and attractions.
Story 5: morgan
The Morgan County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the Fiscal Year 2024 budget, totaling $59.2 million, with a general fund budget of $25.8 million. The general fund budget has increased by nearly 11% compared to the previous year. Despite the budget increase, the county plans to adopt a reduced millage rate lower than the recommended rollback rate set by Georgia. The budget allocates funds for various department needs, including equipment, repairs, projects, and staffing. The majority of increased revenues come from property taxes. The budget includes significant increases for eight departments, with the largest increase going towards debt service payments and funding for Morgan County Fire and Rescue……read more about this at morgancountycitizen.com
STORY 6: pool
Amanda Lynn Jordan, a 40-year-old resident of Mansfield, was arrested and charged with terroristic threats and acts, as well as simple assault. The incident occurred during a pool party at a residence on Elliot Road. Jordan allegedly threatened to kill a man and grabbed a child he was raising, forcing the child to the ground and raising a fist as if to strike them. The man had refused to let Jordan stay at his residence, which apparently upset her. When the man tried to leave to defuse the argument, he witnessed Jordan grabbing the child. In addition, the man claimed that Jordan and her brother had been coming to his house late at night and knocking on the windows, causing him to fear for his children's safety. Jordan was eventually apprehended near the basement of the Elliot Road residence.
