BREAK: MONSTER JAM 2025_FINAL – MORGAN MEDICAL JAN_FINAL

STORY 1:   One killed in Tuesday accident

In Covington, a fatal accident occurred Tuesday morning when a wide-load tractor trailer carrying an excavator turned onto Access Road, colliding with an oncoming GMC van. The van struck the excavator's tracks, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened west of Old Oxford Road. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident, with details still preliminary.

STORY 2:     Smuggling Ring Busted At Morgan County Jail

Morgan County Jail staff uncovered a contraband smuggling ring after suspicious crinkling in a pair of long johns led to the discovery of Percocet pills, tobacco, and rolling papers hidden in the waistband. Inmate Antonio Delango Brown, 26, was identified as the ringleader, with Jaquatta Jernigan, 21, delivering the items, and Norbeta Coleman, 24, coordinating the operation. Investigators believe Coleman, a possible love interest of Brown, was pressured into involvement. The smuggling attempt could have introduced fentanyl-laced pills into the jail. Following the incident, the jail banned outside clothing deliveries to prevent future contraband smuggling.

STORY 3:  Newton mulls change to closure pay policy

Newton County is revising its personnel policy regarding compensation for employees required to work during office closures. County Attorney Patrick Jaugstetter highlighted confusion and inconsistent application in the current policy, recommending starting fresh by eliminating Section 1118. However, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to table the decision for 60 days to clarify the policy. Currently, essential employees receive full pay plus closure pay during emergencies, but commissioners agreed additional compensation is needed. Separately, the board approved allowing the Human Resources director to report directly to them on matters involving the county manager, ensuring oversight remains intact.

STORY 4:  Humane Society Presents Check to Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Morgan County and the Humane Society of Morgan County collaborated to repair a donated house on Eugene Road, culminating in a $10,700 donation from the Humane Society to Habitat on March 21. Habitat volunteers contributed over 300 hours, completing extensive repairs, including rebuilding decks, installing doors, and painting. The house, donated through estates, will be sold to support the Humane Society’s mission of rescuing animals and promoting spay/neuter programs. This partnership highlights the impact of legacy giving and the dedication of both nonprofits, with Habitat preparing to break ground on its next home this month.

STORY 5:   Two teens charged in Senior Skip Day murder

Two high school students, Jarvis Hinton Jr., 16, and Tashshawn Lyons, 17, have been charged with murder in the shooting of Justin Etienne, 18, during Senior Skip Day at Denny Dobbs Park on March 19. Hinton, a Newton High student, was arrested at school and charged as an adult, while Lyons, a Rockdale County High student, was arrested after being hospitalized for injuries sustained fleeing the scene. Etienne, a bystander, was falsely accused of involvement in the altercation. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office commended investigators and warned against spreading false information during the ongoing investigation.
