The Newton County Sheriff's Office has made one arrest, Robert Maurice Smith, and is seeking another suspect, Jordan Smith. The incident is described as a domestic violence incident. Jordan Smith, also from Conyers, is wanted on warrants related to the incident.
STORY 2: Madison breaks ground on its newest affordable housing initiative Carmichael Commons
The groundbreaking ceremony for the $18.1 million Carmichael Commons affordable housing project in Madison was held on February 28th. Approved by the Madison City Council in August 2022, the project will include 60 townhomes and a four-acre park. Financing primarily relies on federal and state Low Income Housing Tax Credits. Mayor Fred Perriman emphasized the need for diverse housing options. Rent for units will vary based on size and income qualifications, with prices ranging from $655 to $985 for three-bedroom units. The complex will feature amenities like a fitness center, community gardens, and a dog park, with a focus on energy efficiency to ensure low utility costs for residents. The project aims to address the critical need for affordable housing in Madison.
STORY 3: Perimeter Students Get Up Close Civics Lesson Working the Polls
Eleven students from Georgia State's Perimeter College are gaining practical civics experience by working as poll workers in Newton and Rockdale counties during the presidential preference primary. Trained in voting protocols, they assist voters and ensure a smooth process. These students, enrolled in Barbara Robertson's American Government course, find value in participating despite early morning shifts and long hours. Robertson initiated this opportunity before the 2022 midterm elections, aiming to connect classroom learning with real-world engagement. Students like Skyelan Martin and Kaitlyn Harvey highlight the importance of youth involvement in the electoral process, underscoring the significance of representation and the democratic process.

STORY 5: Newton County Commissioner Stan Edwards Announces Tax Relief Plan
Newton County District 1 Commissioner Stan Edwards proposed a plan to provide property tax relief for homeowners by using a portion of the county's fund balance. With approximately $58 million in reserve funds, Edwards suggests using $12,987,000 to reduce property taxes. He argues that rising property assessments necessitate relief for taxpayers. The plan involves reducing the assessed value of each homestead property by $20,991, equivalent to $513 in tax revenue for each property. Edwards emphasizes the need to give back to homeowners, comparing his proposal to Governor Brian Kemp's use of state surplus funds for tax relief. Despite acknowledging capital needs, Edwards believes it's time to prioritize taxpayer relief.
