Story 1: Ossoff

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, is working with bipartisan support to introduce the Healthy Poultry Assistance and Indemnification Act. This legislation aims to provide increased support to Georgia's poultry farmers during avian influenza outbreaks. Currently, all farmers in outbreak control areas are restricted from restocking flocks, regardless of infection status. The proposed bill seeks to expand USDA financial assistance to all affected farmers in these areas. This initiative has garnered support from various agricultural organizations. Ossoff's efforts also include advocating for increased funding for poultry research and workforce development in the poultry industry.

Story 2: GOP governors call for more aggressive federal stand on illegal immigration

Over two dozen Republican governors, including Georgia's Brian Kemp, have penned a letter to President Joe Biden, urging a more aggressive federal stance on illegal immigration. They argue that Biden's policies have led to a surge in illegal border crossings and drug and human trafficking by cartels, placing a significant burden on their states. The governors emphasize their commitment to addressing these issues but express concern about the federal government's response. The letter highlights over 5.8 million illegal border crossings since Biden's inauguration in January 2021, with an estimated 1.6 million evading apprehension, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Story 3: Georgia Supreme Court declares revenue from COAM leases exempt from taxes

The Georgia Department of Revenue has lost a legal case attempting to tax revenue generated from leasing coin-operated amusement machines (COAMs). The state Supreme Court upheld a lower-court ruling, stating that gross revenue from COAMs is exempt from taxation. Funvestment Group, which operates an arcade in Gwinnett County, brought the case after the revenue department tried to collect taxes on lease income from COAM machines. The department argued that only income from customers playing the games was tax-exempt. However, both the lower courts and the Georgia Supreme Court agreed that lease income from COAMs is also tax-exempt, as the law doesn't specify revenue sources.

Story 4: Bishop announces additional regional airport funding

Congressman Sanford Bishop Jr., a Democrat from Georgia, has announced that the Columbus Airport and Middle Georgia Regional Airport will receive nearly $16 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program. These funds will be used for runway reconstruction and expansion projects. This announcement follows previous funding for the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport in Albany. The investments aim to support local economies, ensure traveler safety, and maintain critical infrastructure for efficient supply chain operations. Bishop emphasized the importance of robustly funding the Airport Improvement Program to support local airports.

Story 5: David Graves named director of UGA undergraduate admissions

The University of Georgia has appointed David Graves as its director of undergraduate admissions, effective September 1st. In this role, Graves will oversee student recruitment, application review, and merit-based scholarships. With over 30 years of admissions experience, he has been a leader at UGA and has played a significant role in modernizing the admissions process. He is also known for his UGA Admissions Blog, a resource for students and parents. Graves holds degrees in history and English and is recognized as an expert in college admissions. Additionally, he has volunteered with Camp Sunshine for nearly three decades.
