Governor Brian Kemp has announced that over $225 million in federal pandemic relief funding will be allocated towards 142 neighborhood improvement projects in Georgia. These projects aim to enhance parks and sidewalks across the state. One of the recipients is the city of Oxford, which will receive $2.2 million for the Soule Street Multi-use Trail Project. The grants, totaling up to $2.2 million each, will be awarded to eligible nonprofits and local governments in low-income census tracts. The funds will be used to improve or maintain recreational facilities, as well as repair parks and sidewalks that have experienced increased wear and tear during the pandemic. This investment aims to support the recovery efforts of communities heavily impacted by the pandemic.
The Conyers City Council has approved new election districts for the city, pending final approval on June 7. The changes are based on the 2020 Census and aim to ensure compliance with the one-person, one-vote principle. City Attorney Carrie Bootcheck explained that the previous districts had slight imbalances, with a deviation of 11.3% from equal population distribution, exceeding the 10% allowance. The proposed plan would reduce the deviation to 1.4%. The redrawn districts maintain their majority-minority status, with the highest minority population percentage in District 1 at 76%, well below the 80% limit set by law. Minor adjustments were made to achieve these objectives….see the map of the districts at www.rockdalenewtoncitizen.com
