STORY 1: Sex Abuse
A Columbus resident, Townes Ward Borum, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing photos and videos of child sexual abuse. Borum pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography. In addition to her prison sentence, she will be under supervised release for 10 years and must register as a sex offender for life. The case emerged when Borum was found to be distributing explicit photos of a young child to a man in New Jersey. A subsequent investigation uncovered digital files of child sexual abuse material on the man's cell phone, with Borum identified as the source. STORY 2: ATL Thoroughfare
The Atlanta City Council has approved nearly $21.5 million for the "Howell Mill Road Complete Street Project" on the city's westside. The project includes three new signalized intersections, mid-block crossings, and raised bicycle lanes between Marietta Street and Collier Road. District 9 Council member Dustin Hillis highlighted the project's aim to make Howell Mill more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly. Funding for the project is sourced from various channels, including the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and proceeds from a 2015 Infrastructure Bond. Construction began in January 2016 and is expected to conclude in February 2026.
Story 3 : GBI
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has promoted Zach Johnson to assistant special agent in charge of the GBI's Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville. In his new role, Johnson will assist with daily operations and supervise special agents assigned to the office. Johnson began his career with the GBI in 2015 and has been with the Thomasville office since 2016. He is a POST-certified instructor authorized to teach interview and interrogation tactics and was awarded the 2022 Deputy Director's Award for his work in a homicide investigation. The GBI is a state law enforcement agency with divisions including the Crime Laboratory, Investigative Division, and Legal Division..........……….……

U.S. Rep. Austin Scott has announced plans for mobile offices in various counties in Georgia's Eighth District. During these events, constituents can receive assistance with federal issues, including Medicare, Social Security, immigration, IRS, and veterans' benefits. The mobile office events will take place in multiple counties on different dates in September, with staff from Scott's district offices available to provide individual assistance. These events aim to offer constituents the opportunity to address their federal concerns and questions. Story 5: Automotive
Automotive parts manufacturer DAS Corp. is planning to establish a new manufacturing facility in Candler County, Georgia. This project, along with collaborative indirect investments, is expected to amount to over $35 million. The facility in Metter, Georgia, will focus on producing automotive seat structures. It is projected to create 300 jobs and is set to commence operations by the end of 2024. DAS Corp. is a supplier to Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia and Hyundai Motor Group, specializing in the design and manufacturing of seating systems and safety seating components. The project is supported by Georgia Quick Start, and further details about incentives offered have not been disclosed

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded the state of Georgia a $3 million equity grant aimed at improving access to unemployment benefits. The grant supports several key initiatives, including a Plain Language Initiative to revise unemployment-related documents for better accessibility, especially for applicants with limited English proficiency or literacy levels. Another initiative involves establishing a mobile unit to provide in-person support and assistance to residents across the state, addressing the digital divide. These efforts align with the Georgia Department of Labor's mission to serve all Georgians regardless of race, age, ethnicity, disability status, or geographic location. The grant is part of the American Rescue Plan Act's initiatives to enhance access to unemployment benefits.
STORY 7: McCann
Duluth High School graduate and former Atlanta Braves player Brian McCann is among the Class of 2024 inductees into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. This announcement was made by the Macon-based organization. McCann is joined by other notable sports figures, including Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Eric Berry, Cris Carpenter, Thomas Davis Sr., Claude Felton, Paul Johnson, and Wendy White-Prausa. The induction ceremony and related events are scheduled for February 23-24, 2024, in Macon. McCann, a former Braves catcher, had a successful 15-year career in MLB, earning numerous All-Star and Silver Slugger honors, including a World Series championship with the Houston Astros in 2017.
