Gwinnett County officials are warning residents in the Dacula area to be cautious outdoors after a rabid raccoon attacked a 2-year-old child last week. The toddler was bitten after attempting to pet the raccoon, which later tested positive for rabies. Rabies can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from infected animals like raccoons, foxes, and household pets. The virus attacks the central nervous system and is almost always fatal if untreated. This incident marks the sixth report of a rabid animal attacking a person in Gwinnett County's northern half since late March. The county advises pet owners to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations and avoid keeping wild animals as pets. Anyone encountering an animal acting strangely or aggressively should call the animal welfare office. If bitten or scratched, immediate medical care and notifying the health department are essential. Additionally, preventive measures include vaccinating pets regularly, teaching children not to approach wild animals, and keeping garbage and pet food indoors to avoid attracting wildlife.
