STORY 1: Ragsdale Stands Firm as Cobb School Board Rejects Library Book Policy Changes
The Cobb Board of Education voted 5-2 to reject proposed changes to the district's library book policy. The proposed changes, put forth by Democratic school board member Becky Sayler, would have specified which books could be permitted for use in school libraries based on criteria such as awards and relevance to major world religions. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale opposed the changes, stating that they would restrict his ability to remove inappropriate material from school libraries. Ragsdale had previously ordered the removal of certain books, deeming them sexually explicit. Critics argued that the proposed policy would enable a group of educators to make these decisions rather than the superintendent.
STORY 2: Butterfly Garden Honors Victim of Recently Solved Marietta Cold Case
The Marietta community dedicated a butterfly garden to the memory of Debbie Lynn Randall, a nine-year-old girl who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in 1972. The case had gone unsolved for decades until recently, when the Cobb County District Attorney's Office identified the late William Rose as the perpetrator. The tragedy led to the creation of the Cobb-Marietta Girls Club, which has since grown into Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta, a program that provides support and resources for girls aged five to 18. The dedication ceremony brought together members of the community, including Randall's brother, Melvin Randall, and highlighted the positive change that stemmed from tragedy.
STORY 3: Cobb Development Authority OKs $50k in Cash Grants to Startups
The Development Authority of Cobb County has approved the allocation of $50,000 in cash grants to support small businesses in the county through the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Grant program. This program, which provides financial assistance to entrepreneurs starting businesses in Cobb County, was initially funded with $50,000 in 2019. The recent unanimous approval marks the fourth allocation, bringing the total funds to $200,000. The grant program aims to promote economic activity within the county by assisting small businesses and entrepreneurs. It is administered by Cobb County government's economic development staff, who review and vet applicants to ensure they meet the program's criteria.

STORY 4: Muslim Parents Criticize Cobb Schools for Alert Referencing Hamas
A group of Cobb Muslim residents, many with children in the Cobb County School District, have criticized the district for issuing an alert about "an international threat" from the Palestinian group Hamas. The parents, mostly mothers, believe the alert was uncalled for and endangers their children. They expressed concern about the district's responsibility for spreading "dangerous misinformation" and called for the Cobb Board of Education to be more sensitive in the future. They believe the notification mentioning Hamas endangers students and makes them vulnerable to bullying. Parents suggested the district should focus more on potential mass shootings rather than threats from foreign entities.
STORY 5: Powder Springs Native Makes Racing History
Myles Rowe, a native of Powder Springs, achieved racing history by becoming the first African-American driver to win a major U.S. open-wheel championship, the 2023 USF Pro 2000 title. He was also the first Black driver to win an IndyCar-sanctioned race in August 2021. The Powder Springs City Council recognized his achievements and presented a Certificate of Achievement to his parents. Rowe's journey in racing started at the age of 4 when he developed a passion for karting. Despite the financial burdens and challenges, he persevered, earned a degree in film and screen studies, and joined professional racing teams, ultimately securing the USF Pro 2000 championship and a scholarship package for INDY NXT in 2024.

STORY 7: Kennesaw State Scholarship Celebrates Professor and Late Husband’s Love of Travel
Kennesaw State University professor Teresa Raczek and her late husband Brian LaRaia shared a passion for travel and gourmet cooking inspired by their adventures. After Brian's passing in 2021, they aimed to honor his memory by helping others explore the world and gain new perspectives. They established the Brian Olcott LaRaia Traveling Scholarship with an initial gift of $50,000 in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2022. To further support the scholarship, Raczek recently contributed a planned gift of over $200,000.
