He helped pass the FY '24 National Defense Authorization Act, including multiple bills and priorities to upgrade facilities, enhance mental health care access, increase oversight of housing, and expand services for veterans. The bill also features a 5.2% pay increase for servicemembers. Ossoff emphasized the bipartisan nature of the legislation and its commitment to a strong national defense and better military quality of life.

Election security remains a contentious issue in Georgia as the 2024 election approaches. Lt. Governor Burt Jones and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger met to discuss a 2021 report highlighting vulnerabilities in the state's voting system, leading to concerns raised by the Georgia Republican Party. Jones expressed frustration with Raffensperger's approach in addressing election integrity. Raffensperger proposed the "Secure the Vote Plan" to enhance accountability and accuracy in the election process. Georgia's election laws, such as Senate Bill 202, have faced criticism from various interest groups. Attorney General Chris Carr announced the indictment of Marquise Hawkins and Kendaryl Rogers for their alleged involvement in a fatal drive-by shooting in Columbus on August 6, 2020. The defendants, alleged members of a criminal street gang known as Drive By Hustle Boys, face charges of felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. The Gang Prosecution Unit presented evidence to a grand jury resulting in the indictment. The case was investigated by the Columbus Police Department, Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Gang Task Force. The authorities are committed to tackling gang violence in Georgia communities.

Aaron Jamal Denzel Austin, a resident of Macon, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for committing wire fraud in an identity theft scheme. He used stolen personal information to register fake businesses and obtain credit cards with large credit lines. Authorities found debit cards and driver's licenses of other individuals during a traffic stop, leading to the discovery of his fraudulent activities. Investigators found evidence of criminal fraud discussions and identified 23 victims, with a total loss of $100,000. The case was investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the United States Secret Service, and Austin will be under three years of supervised release after his prison term.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division is conducting a blue catfish tagging project on the Satilla River to study this non-native species' impact. Anglers are asked to report tagged fish, and in exchange, they will receive rewards like custom hats and information about the tagged fish. The study aims to understand the movement of blue catfish in the river and assess their impact on native species. The tagging effort will provide valuable data for fishery managers and help protect the river's ecosystem. For reporting, anglers need to provide details like total length, weight, and catch information.

 

  1. Scheme

An Arizona man, Ronald Bell, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for trying to extort Georgia Tech by making a false accusation against former basketball coach Josh Pastner. Bell colluded with a security guard to falsely claim that he witnessed Pastner assaulting Jennifer Pendley. Bell demanded money from Georgia Tech representatives in exchange for not going through with the assault claim. The security guard confessed to making false statements on Bell and Pendley's behalf. Bell was held accountable for his crime and Pendley will be sentenced later for her role. Pastner was previously cleared of wrongdoing by a Title IX investigation in 2018.
