Developer Merritt Lancaster, a co-founder of Bridger Properties, participated in a panel on the economic health of Marietta Square. Lancaster focused on why his company viewed the square as a profitable investment and what residents wanted. According to an online survey, residents wanted more food and beverage businesses in the area. Lancaster said attracting new restaurants and bars would keep dollars in the Square. However, a resident warned that Marietta is not the same as Roswell or Woodstock, and its local restaurants and shops are what make it special. Lancaster's firm has faced controversy since September when it hiked rents or declined to renew leases for storefronts on Church Street.
The city of Acworth announced the permanent closure of the School Street railroad crossing downtown due to frequent collisions between vehicles and trains since 2018. The city has been unsuccessful in identifying alternate crossing locations to supplement the closure. The incidents have cost the police and public works departments money and resources, and the recent collision rendered the south cross arm inoperable. The city attributed the frequent issues to the railroad's track raising, leading to trucks and trailers getting stuck. The closure aims to prevent a potential public health event from train derailments carrying hazardous materials through the community.
