STORY 1: Ringgold Youth Council Series Will Feature Ridley Murder Trial

On February 22, the Ringgold Youth Council is hosting "A Night Out with Living Legends," featuring Alvin Ridley and his defense attorney McCracken Poston Jr. The event provides an opportunity for the public to hear about Ridley's riveting murder trial from 1997 and delve into Ringgold's history. Ridley, accused of killing his wife but later exonerated in 1999, will be joined by Poston, who defended him and wrote a book about their experience. The event, hosted by Jed Mescon, offers a chance for attendees to ask questions and gain insights into this compelling story. The Ringgold Youth Council aims to strengthen the community by highlighting historical events and promoting involvement in community improvement initiatives.

STORY 2: First-Of-Its-Kind Solar Glass Manufacturing Facility Coming to Cedartown. Here’s What We Know

A groundbreaking investment in Cedartown and Polk County by SOLARCYCLE, an innovative solar recycling company, is set to create over 600 full-time jobs with an estimated investment of $344 million. Governor Brian Kemp announced the plan, stating it would have a transformative impact on the local economy. The new facility, expected to commence operations in 2026, will recycle materials from retired solar panels to produce new solar glass, a first-of-its-kind venture in the country. SOLARCYCLE's arrival is the result of years of planning and collaboration between local governments, economic authorities, and the state of Georgia. The company's commitment to sustainability and job creation is seen as a significant boost to the region's economy and will contribute to the state's burgeoning solar industry.

STORY 3: Greene And Loudermilk Applaud Razor Thin Passage Of Mayorkas Impeachment Articles

Northwest Georgia Congressional Republicans celebrated the narrow passage of impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, highlighting concerns over border security and immigration policy. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized the importance of securing the border and criticized Mayorkas for alleged failures in enforcing immigration laws. Rep. Barry Loudermilk accused Mayorkas of subverting U.S. laws and contributing to security and humanitarian crises at the southern border. However, the impeachment faces hurdles in the Democratic-led Senate. Meanwhile, immigration emerges as a key election issue, with Republicans aiming to capitalize on public concerns. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's decision to send National Guard engineers to the Texas border underscores state-level efforts to address immigration challenges.

STORY 4: Free Course Offers Chance to Learn Life-Saving CPR Techniques

AdventHealth Redmond EMS is offering free community CPR courses throughout February, aiming to equip individuals with life-saving skills during cardiac emergencies. The hands-on sessions cover hands-only CPR and the proper use of AEDs. Director Marty Robinson emphasizes the importance of early intervention and access to CPR or AEDs in saving lives. Participants learn to recognize cardiac arrest signs, perform chest compressions, and utilize AEDs effectively. The courses, part of American Heart Month, prioritize rapid response and basic life-saving skills. Attendees, including Rockmart officials, are instructed on the correct compression rate and rotation during CPR. AEDs, present in many public places, offer further assistance by analyzing heart rhythms and delivering shocks if needed. For comprehensive training, including full CPR and first-aid, resources are available through organizations like the American Red Cross.

One Community United's annual One Table dinner, typically held on the John Ross Pedestrian Bridge, faces a venue change due to a scheduling conflict with the Forum. The Forum's contract for a musical performance prevents its use for the dinner prep and facilities. Despite this, the Rome Public Works Committee approved the use of the footbridge, emphasizing the event's symbolic unity. The event, symbolizing racial harmony and community unity, will adapt to the change in venue, showcasing the organization's commitment to its mission. The City of Rome's control over downtown spaces adds a new dynamic to event planning.
