STORY 1: Rockdale County board reviews fire rescue needs

The Rockdale County Fire-Rescue Department in Georgia is facing an urgent need to repair a ladder for one of its oldest fire engines, dating back to 2000 and with over 200,000 miles. The repair is estimated to cost over $20,000 and will be funded through general services in the county's budgeted capital improvement plan, with consideration for SPLOST funding. The department is concerned about the ladder's impact on their Insurance Services Offices assessment in November, as well as the extended lead time for equipment replacements, which could delay improvements until early 2025. The ISO rating affects fire insurance rates for the community.........…….Stay up to date on this developing story at rockdalenewtoncitizen.com.

Story 4: Expanded Senior Center opens in Newton County

Newton County celebrated the opening of the expanded Josephine Brown Senior Center at Turner Lake Complex. Funded through 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds, the expansion includes an enrichment lab, classroom, multi-purpose room, and a new lobby. Josephine Brown, in whose honor the center is named, served as the director of Senior Services in Newton County for 57 years and expressed her joy in seeing the center's growth from its earlier state to the expanded facility. The expansion aims to provide seniors with a homelike atmosphere and additional resources.

Story 5: Covington approves first reading of impact fee ordinance

The Covington City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would establish development impact fees in the city. These fees are levied on new development to fund the expansion of public facilities needed due to growth. The proposed ordinance includes a fee schedule reflecting the maximum fees allowed under state law, with the council having the option to modify them during the final approval. Impact fees would cover areas such as open space, public safety facilities, public utilities, and road improvements. Some projects are exempt, and the council has the authority to waive fees in certain circumstances.

STORY 6:  Conyers sets public access policy

The Conyers City Council has approved a policy governing public access and recording on city property. The policy designates certain areas as "limited access" where public access is restricted, such as employee offices, workspaces, and certain outside areas. It also outlines rules of conduct on city property, prohibiting disruptive behavior or harassment. While photography, audio recording, or video recording alone do not violate the conduct rules, they are restricted if they interfere with the passage of city employees or access to private information. Recording in limited-access areas requires permission or is allowed on an as-needed basis. Non-public access areas are also defined in the policy.

STORY 7: Woman found floating on mattress in pool charged with burglary

On September 18, Amanda Lynn Jordan, a 40-year-old woman from Madison, was arrested and charged with burglary. She was found apparently asleep on an inflatable mattress floating in a pool at a residence on Elliot Road, Mansfield. Deputies responded to a burglary attempt after a security video showed Jordan trying to enter the house with a hammer and knife. Although Jordan claimed to live at the residence, it had been more than six months since she had resided there. Property owners wanted to press charges, and deputies had to use a pool cleaning brush to eventually apprehend Jordan, who was then taken to the Morgan County Detention Center.
