STORY 1: Rockdale Public Schools Names Teacher of the Year Finalists
At the 2024 RCPS Convocation, Rockdale County Public Schools revealed the top three Teacher of the Year finalists: Lindsay Ezell from Memorial Middle School, Dr. Chuck Garner from Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, and Tonya Grant from Barksdale Elementary School. Each was honored in a surprise announcement before the district's employees. Ezell, who teaches sixth-grade math and coaches various sports, is recognized for her community involvement and personal achievements. Dr. Garner, a veteran math teacher and author, is noted for his extensive contributions to educational organizations and his passion for teaching. Grant, a media specialist with 26 years of experience, is celebrated for her extensive volunteer work and successful teaching impact. The RCPS Teacher of the Year will be announced at a celebration on September 26, 2024.
STORY 2: Rolling Stones tribute band to play The Plaza Aug. 24
The tribute band "Satisfaction — The International Rolling Stones Tribute Show" is renowned for its authentic portrayal of The Rolling Stones, with over 4,000 performances in 22 years. Praised by major media outlets, including CBS News and the Washington Post, this show recreates the iconic rock band's legendary performances with remarkable accuracy. They will perform at The Plaza Arts Center in Eatonton on August 24, with the music starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at plazacenter.org or by calling 706-923-1655.
STORY 3: Newton County Sets Slightly Reduced Millage Rate
At a special meeting on Tuesday, the Newton County Board of Commissioners set a tentative 2024 millage rate at 8.242 mills, slightly down from last year’s 8.4 mills. The rollback rate is 7.9 mills, meaning property owners with increased assessments will face higher taxes. For a $300,000 home, this translates to about $32.13 more in taxes. District 1 Commissioner Stan Edwards motioned for the rate, supported by District 5 Commissioner Ronnie Cowan, while District 3 Commissioner Alana Sanders opposed it, advocating for more use of the county’s $60 million reserve fund. Sanders argued that the county’s growing tax base could justify a lower rate. The general fund budget of $99.5 million includes $1.1 million from reserves, with Edwards noting that budget increases were due to employee benefits and debt payments.

STORY 4: Morgan County NAACP To Hold Youth Fun Day
The Morgan County Youth Council and NAACP invite everyone to their Annual Youth Fun Day on Saturday, August 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Union Springs Baptist Church, 1400 W. Main St, Rutledge. The event celebrates community spirit and youth involvement with activities including Georgia Military College science demos, rodeo activities, bounce houses, face painting, food, and prizes. STORY 5: Archer Aviation on Track to Complete Covington Plant This Year
Archer Aviation's new facility in Covington, set to be completed this year, will become one of the largest aviation manufacturing sites, supporting the production of up to 650 Midnight electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft annually. The facility, adjacent to Covington Municipal Airport, is nearly 400,000 square feet and is progressing through its construction phases. Archer, in collaboration with Stellantis, aims to revolutionize urban travel with the Midnight aircraft, which promises 150 mph speeds, 20-50 mile flights, and a noise level 100 times quieter than helicopters. The aircraft is designed for efficiency, safety, and sustainability, offering a significant alternative to traditional ground transportation.
