STORY 1: School board OKs GSBA contract to find next Cherokee superintendent

The Cherokee County school board has decided to limit the search for the district's next superintendent to candidates from the Southeastern United States. This decision comes as the current superintendent, Brian Hightower, is set to retire on May 31. The board has approved a contract with the Georgia School Boards Association to assist in the superintendent search, with a payment of $15,000, along with travel-related expenses. The GSBA will be responsible for advertising the vacancy, processing applications, screening candidates, and arranging interviews, among other duties. The board also added a requirement that candidates must reside in the Southeastern United States, with a preference for those from Georgia........……Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com

STORY 2: Canton approves new regulations for breweries, distilleries and wineries

The Canton City Council has approved an amendment to the city's development code, allowing breweries, distilleries, and wineries as conditional uses in specific zoning districts within the city. This change enables such establishments in general commercial, light industrial, central business district, and planned development zoning districts. Previously, breweries were allowed in certain districts, but this amendment expands the possibilities and adds definitions for distillery and winery. The conditional use permit process will require applicants to provide detailed information about their operations, special event capabilities, hours of operation, and more. This amendment aligns with the growing trend of breweries and distilleries as popular business startups in downtown areas across Georgia. Additionally, the council approved contracts for pedestrian access and travel improvements in the city.

STORY 3: Health department administers flu shots via drive-thru in Woodstock

The Cherokee County Health Department, as part of the North Georgia Health District, provided drive-thru flu shots to over 100 people in Woodstock as the flu season begins. This annual initiative helps combat illness by offering convenient access to flu vaccinations. The event, held at the Woodstock Health Center, also serves as an exercise in emergency preparedness, ensuring that health agencies are ready for potential public health emergencies. Getting a flu shot now is an effective way to protect against the flu throughout the season, and it can even reduce the severity of symptoms if infection does occur. The vaccine is available at no cost to individuals covered by various health insurance plans, with options for those paying out-of-pocket.

STORY 4: Georgia going proactive in college admissions

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced GEORGIA MATCH, the largest direct-to-college admission initiative in the nation. Over 120,000 high school seniors in Georgia will receive personalized letters listing the public universities, colleges, and technical colleges they are academically eligible to attend. The initiative aims to engage all learners, including those who may not have previously considered higher education an option, in addressing the state's workforce development needs. GEORGIA MATCH will help keep up with the growing demand for workers, with over 38,000 new jobs created in Georgia during the last fiscal year. The program is expected to cost $1.3 million during its first year and will waive application fees for participating institutions in November.

STORY 5: Reinhardt outduels Pikeville in overtime

Reinhardt University's football team won their conference opener against Pikeville 41-35 in overtime. This victory marked a season-high for the Eagles, with their offense finding its stride after a few inconsistent weeks. Quarterback Taylor Jackson led a game-tying drive with just over a minute left in regulation, sending the game into overtime. In the extra period, Jackson connected with Luis Morris for a 25-yard touchdown, and the Eagles held on for the win with a strong defensive stand. Jackson finished with 266 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Jerdavian Colbert rushed for 150 yards. This conference win provided a significant momentum boost for Reinhardt's young football team.
