STORY 1: Shots Fired in Covington When Shoe Transaction Goes Wrong

A 20-year-old man narrowly escaped injury during an attempted armed robbery on Sunday in Covington. The victim had arranged to sell a pair of shoes to individuals he met online. However, upon meeting at a residence, the purported buyers, dressed in dark clothing and masks, brandished a gun. Fearing for his safety, the victim fled in his vehicle, which was subsequently fired upon, causing him to crash into nearby woods. The Newton County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident.

STORY 2: Five arrested in store break-ins in Covington

In Covington, a group of five men allegedly broke into six businesses, stealing liquor and cash before leading police on a chase through Newton and Rockdale counties. The incident began with a burglar alarm at Edible Arrangements, followed by shattered glass doors at several other establishments. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts helped identify the suspects' vehicle, a stolen white Hyundai Sonata. After a pursuit, the vehicle was stopped by Conyers police, leading to the arrest of the suspects. Inside the vehicle, officers found stolen liquor bottles, cigars, and a cash register drawer. The arrested individuals face various charges including obstruction of law enforcement, burglary, and possession of stolen property.

STORY 3: No2Rivian group wins appeal over paying $364K bond in zoning lawsuit

The No2Rivian plaintiffs, involved in lawsuits against Georgia regarding the Rivian Electric Vehicle megafactory, won an appeal overturning a ruling demanding a $364,619 bond to continue their zoning lawsuit. The Fulton County Superior Court initially ordered the bond, deeming the lawsuit potentially frivolous. However, the Georgia Court of Appeals reversed this decision, allowing the zoning lawsuit to proceed without the bond requirement. The case alleges non-compliance with local zoning regulations and environmental concerns. This victory for the plaintiffs marks a significant development in their legal battle against the Rivian project.

STORY 4: Rockdale County Juvenile Court Judge Looks to Launch Male Initiative to Inspire Youths

Judge Maureen Wood of Rockdale County Juvenile Court is launching an initiative to connect young men in the community with professional mentors to help them achieve their future goals. The program aims to provide prevention and intervention by offering youths the opportunity to connect with adult professionals residing in Rockdale County. Set to begin in March, the program will accommodate up to 100 participants, who are encouraged to contact the Juvenile Court Clerk's Office. STORY 5: BOC approves administrative appeal to allow landowner to subdivide

The Morgan County Board of Commissioners approved an administrative appeal from Dustin Weaver, allowing him to carve out a five-acre lot on a 35-acre tract of property for a bank loan. Weaver explained that he needed the separate lot as collateral for a construction loan to build a single-family house while retaining the rest for agricultural use. The property fell under a three-year subdivision ban adopted in 2022, but Weaver sought a waiver. Commissioners expressed support, emphasizing Weaver's intention to retain ownership and continue farming operations. Additionally, the board approved resolutions requesting a $5 surcharge for certain court cases to offset technology costs and awarded a $183,943 contract for bridge repair funded partly by a state grant and Transportation Local Option Sales Tax funds.
