  1. tax

We begin here locally, The city of Conyers adopted a millage rate 13.334 mills, which is half a mill less than last year's rate. Many homeowners will pay less taxes than last year due to the rate decrease. The 10.97% increase in property tax collections will mostly affect commercial, industrial, and non-homeowner residential properties. The city also decreased its bond millage by a quarter of a mill. Examples provided by the Finance Director show that around 80% to 85% of homeowners will see a decrease in taxes, with some experiencing substantial reductions. The average home value in Conyers is $200,000 with a $20,000 homestead tax exemption for owner-occupied homes…..read more at rockdalenewtoncitizen.com

  1. kemp

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, seeking to overturn the Chevron deference established in 1984. The Chevron deference gives federal agencies the power to interpret statutes, and critics argue it has led to regulatory instability and an excessive concentration of power in unelected bureaucrats. Kemp argues that overturning Chevron is essential to cut burdensome regulations and ensure that Georgia's policies reflect the will of its citizens rather than federal agency dictates. The case originated from a lawsuit filed by Loper Bright Enterprises in 2020 over monitoring regulations for Atlantic herring fishermen.

  1. logistics

Bradshaw Home, a kitchen and cleaning products designer, will construct a new distribution center in Effingham County, generating over 230 new jobs. The move comes as Georgia's business-friendly environment and workforce continue to attract industry leaders. The new 1.2 million-square-foot facility, located at the Savannah Portside International Park, is set to open in November. Bradshaw Home's decision to establish an East Coast location aims to better serve its customers and reduce freight miles. The company will partner with NFI, leveraging their supply chain expertise to efficiently operate the new facility. The expansion is expected to benefit retailers and the environment alike....……we’ll be right back…

  1. non profit

Fostering Success Act Inc., a new nonprofit, aims to assist Georgians in contributing to a state tax credit program benefiting young adults aging out of the foster care system. The program allows individual taxpayers to receive dollar-for-dollar state income tax credits for contributions up to $2,500 per year, while married couples filing jointly can receive up to $5,000. Corporate donations are limited to 10% of the company's annual tax liability. The funds will be used for "wraparound" services, such as housing and transportation, to support these young adults as they attend college or technical school. The program aims to reduce poverty and homelessness among this vulnerable population.

  1. WIC

A study from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences reveals that when children age out of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program after their fifth birthday, their diets' nutritional quality decreases by about 20% until they enter kindergarten. WIC provides nutritional food assistance to pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children under 5. The study found that parents switch to lower-quality foods after losing access to WIC. The researchers advocate for extending WIC past age 5 to maintain the progress in children's healthy eating habits. The cost of such an extension is relatively small compared to the overall program budget.

  1. lead

The Clean Water for Georgia Kids program, which tests schools' water fixtures for lead using federal funds, has been beneficial for child safety. When tested in Dade County, most drinking fountains had no detectable lead, with only a few kitchen sinks and faucets showing slightly elevated levels. Doctors stress that even small lead exposure can harm children's brain development. However, the program's participation rates have been relatively low in Georgia, with only 91 out of more than 2,200 public schools and 118 out of around 3,100 childcare centers enrolling since August 2021. Advocates encourage more facilities to join the program to ensure safe drinking water for children and seek legislative measures to increase participation.

  1. Golf

The golf season continues with various high-level events after the recent British Open. The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs are scheduled for August, followed by the Ryder Cup in September, and the LIV Golf Tour will conclude in October. Golf's popularity has grown in recent years, with more people taking up the sport during the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of the LIV Golf Tour, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, attracted top players and increased fan engagement. The recent merger between the PGA, LIV, and the European Tour has created a unified organization with a global reach. Golf's top players come from diverse countries, with more than half of PGA Tour cut-makers hailing from outside the United States, showcasing the sport's global appeal.

28 Georgia-born golfers have made at least one cut at a PGA Tour event in the last decade. Among all 50 states and Washington, DC, Georgia produces the 4th most pro golfers.
