STORY 1: Speaker Mike Johnson: Impeaching Biden ‘needs to be very methodical’

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is considering forcing an impeachment vote against President Joe Biden, but Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need for a thorough investigation process. Johnson, while critical of Biden, stressed that impeachment is a serious power and should be approached methodically. Greene, advocating for immediate action, may use a privileged resolution to prompt a vote if she doesn't get leadership support. Greene has previously introduced multiple resolutions to impeach Biden, starting on his first full day in office. House Republicans are deliberating as they return from the Memorial Day recess.

STORY 2: Fentanyl Overdoses Continue To Plague Northwest Georgia

Fentanyl and opiate abuse are major issues in Northwest Georgia, with the region experiencing the second-highest overdose rate in the state. Dr. Gary Voccio of the Georgia Department of Public Health highlighted the alarming increase in young children exposed to fentanyl, with fatal exposures rising from five in 2013 to 529 in 2023. Fentanyl’s danger is compounded by adulteration with other chemicals. Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs) like Recovery Bartow are effectively addressing the crisis by providing resources and support in affected neighborhoods. Voccio emphasized the importance of Narcan availability to treat overdoses and advocated for banning vaping in schools due to its harmful effects.

STORY 3: Carr Asking Feds to Allow Cellphone Jamming in Prisons

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging the FCC to permit cellphone jamming devices in state prisons and local jails to combat inmates' use of contraband phones for criminal activities. Current FCC regulations from the 1990s prevent state and local governments from using jammers, though federal prisons are allowed. Carr highlighted the high number of contraband phones confiscated in Georgia and recent criminal activities facilitated by inmates using these phones. He argues that jamming technology is essential to curb these threats, supported by Georgia's recent legislation increasing penalties for smuggling contraband into prisons.

STORY 4: RHS Grad Joining U.S. Navy For Nuclear Engineering

Clinton Parker, a recent Rockmart High School graduate, celebrated his enlistment in the U.S. Navy with family and friends during a signing day at the school on May 2. Parker, who officially enlisted on March 25, plans to specialize in nuclear engineering, a highly competitive field within the Navy. He will enter as an E3 rank due to his chosen position. Parker is set to begin basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, on June 24, followed by Nuclear Power Training School in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

STORY 5: Rome Homeless Problem Is Clear, Solution Is Cloudy

The homelessness issue in Rome and Floyd County persists despite ongoing efforts. At a recent meeting of the Rome and Floyd County Joint Services Committee, Rome Mayor Craig McDaniel pushed for stricter enforcement of urban camping and trespassing laws, while also emphasizing the need for medical care and support. McDaniel noted that improving local assistance attracts more homeless individuals from outside the area. Floyd County Commission Chair Allison Watters highlighted that this is a widespread issue and stressed the need for effective models from other regions. Various local organizations are tackling homelessness through food, treatment, and housing initiatives. Despite previous task force efforts and a 2009 action plan, the problem persists, exacerbated by the closure of NW Georgia Regional Hospital and the pandemic's impact.

And now here is Bruce Jenkins’ conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Strawberries.
