Specialists help boost reading skills in Marietta classrooms

Marietta classrooms are enhancing reading skills with the help of 40 full-time reading specialists, costing $5.5 million, for grades 1-5. Lockheed Elementary, for instance, has nine specialists, with seven focused on 2nd-grade students. Specialists adapt to individual needs, with a flexible approach. Collaboration between teachers and specialists occurs through various models, including alternative teaching and team-teaching. The program is particularly crucial due to the 40% of Lockheed students being English learners, requiring intensive instruction. Early results indicate significant gains in oral language skills and overall reading proficiency.
