Story 1: State lawmakers angling to wade into question of property rights along Georgia’s waterways
Tensions have flared in Georgia over public access to waterways, particularly for fishing. An Upson County landowner's attempt to claim exclusive fishing rights on a popular stretch of the Flint River led to a lawsuit, which the state settled earlier this year. Concerns emerged that other landowners might follow suit, prompting late-session legislation designed to protect public access to fishing on navigable waterways. However, another landowner has since filed a lawsuit seeking exclusive fishing rights on a river stretch they argue is non-navigable. State lawmakers are addressing this issue in committee meetings as they aim to clarify the distinction between navigable and non-navigable streams, respecting property owners' rights while ensuring public access.
Story 2: Primitive weapons deer hunting season opened Saturday
Georgia's primitive weapons deer hunting season is set to begin, offering hunters a chance to pursue deer with archery equipment, air bows, muzzle-loading shotguns, air rifles, and muzzle-loading firearms of .30 caliber or larger. Hunters can take up to 10 antlerless deer and no more than two antlered deer during this season, which opens mid-October. Young hunters under 16 have the same opportunities during this season, including on wildlife management area primitive weapons hunts. All harvested deer must be reported through Georgia Game Check within 24 hours, and hunters must wear fluorescent orange above the waist. Hunters are also encouraged to help protect the deer herd from Chronic Wasting Disease. Georgia offers ample public hunting land, and more information can be found in the Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations guide.

Story 4: Georgia’s 2023 high-school graduation rate ticks up again
Georgia's high-school graduation rate for the Class of 2023 reached an all-time high of 84.4%, up from 84.1% the previous year. This marks a 14.7% increase since 2012. Notably, 107 school districts achieved rates at or above 90%, with 43 districts surpassing 95%. The state attributes this success to the efforts of students, teachers, leaders, and families. Georgia calculates its graduation rate based on a federal method that accounts for student transfers during the four-year period. The recent boost in graduation rates is a positive development for students, providing them with new opportunities for their future. The state's graduation rate has generally increased over the past decade, except for a slight dip in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Story 5: Judge scrutinizes claims of lawyer accused of organizing fake GOP electors as trial date nears
During a court hearing in Fulton County, the District Attorney's office argued that Kenneth Chesebro did not have attorney-client privilege when arranging meetings for alternate GOP electors to cast false ballots for former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election. Chesebro faces seven felony conspiracy and fraud charges related to election interference. He is set to stand trial alongside Texas attorney Sidney Powell, Trump, and other supporters in a racketeering case. The prosecution suggested there was an attorney-client relationship between Chesebro and some individuals, but they also contended that he emailed memos to prospective fraudulent electors who weren't his legal representatives. The judge ordered prosecutors to present additional evidence of Chesebro's alleged fraud conspiracy beyond the documents challenged under attorney privilege law. Chesebro's lawyers argued that he was providing legal advice for Trump's re-election bid. The trial is set for October 23, 2023.

Story 6: UGA law school nation's best value in legal education
The University of Georgia School of Law has been recognized as the nation's best value in legal education, securing this top position for the fourth time in the last six years, including a three-year streak from 2018 to 2020. The school emphasizes affordability, accessibility, and return on investment in legal education. Key metrics contributing to this recognition include a nearly 95% employment rate for full-time, long-term, bar-pass required jobs within 10 months of graduation (Class of 2022) and a nearly 99% Ultimate Bar Passage Rate for the Class of 2020. The school has significantly reduced student borrowing and offers competitive tuition and fees, making it a top choice for aspiring legal professionals.
Story 7: Georgia State receives $10 million artificial intelligence research grant
Jonathan Shihao Ji, a computer science professor at Georgia State University, has received a $10 million grant from the Department of Defense to advance research in artificial intelligence and robotics. The grant focuses on human-robot interaction, 3D virtual environment reconstruction, edge computing, and trustworthy AI. One key aspect is working with Boston Dynamics' Spot robot to develop a natural language interface, allowing it to perform more tasks based on verbal commands. The research aims to enhance AI technology, improve human-computer interaction, and increase AI device security. The grant will support students and post-doctoral researchers and promote AI and robotics education in local high schools.
Final thoughts after this.
