STORY 1: murder

Floydell Quinchard Smith, the suspect in the killing of Te’Vian Markez Williams Sr. at Callier Forest Apartments on June 27, has been charged with murder. U.S. Marshals arrested Smith in Dayton, Ohio, last month on aggravated assault charges, with more charges expected. Christany Ya’Breshia Aalyric Foster, a woman from Armuchee, was also arrested for allegedly helping Smith evade police. Williams was found shot in the upper leg and groin area and later pronounced dead at the hospital. His death marks the eighth homicide in Rome this year, compared to six in all of 2022, and the city has seen an increase in shooting incidents....…….get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: qualify

The qualifying period for the Rome and Cave Spring city elections begins on August 21 and ends on August 25. In Rome, six out of nine City Commission seats are up for election, including the three Ward 1 seats and the three Ward 3 seats. Candidates must live in the ward they wish to represent. The qualifying fee is $360. In Cave Spring, two out of five City Council posts will be filled, and the mayor's position has been eliminated with a charter change. The qualifying fee is $45, and candidates must have lived in Cave Spring for at least one year prior to the election. The elections are nonpartisan and citywide.

STORY 3: resigns

Attorney Chris Balch, who represented the City of Rome in an ethics investigation into Rome City Commissioner Mark Cochran, has officially resigned and criticized the behavior of commissioners as "totally unacceptable, unprofessional, and without justification." Balch mentioned heated arguments during City Commission meetings, with accusations and rifts along racial and political lines. The investigation stems from Cochran's statements challenging procedures in the Rome engineering department, which were found to be untrue. Balch addressed concerns about the city's ethics policy and the support shown for Cochran during the investigation. The case awaits a challenge in Floyd County Superior Court on August 21.

STORY 4: grant

The National Park Service has granted $172,133 to preserve over four acres of Civil War forest at the Chickamauga Battlefield in Catoosa County. The battlefield, located in southern Tennessee and northern Georgia, was a crucial area during the Civil War for both the North and South in their struggle for access to supplies and control of Chattanooga's rail hub and iron works. The grant will protect the wooded property as it was during the Civil War through a conservation easement. The funding is part of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which supports conservation and recreation projects across the country using revenue from offshore oil and gas leasing.

STORY 5:  preseason

High school football teams have started official fall practice this week, with GHSA-mandated acclimation days where they must conduct five practice days without pads before moving to full-padded sessions. Several teams will have preseason scrimmages next Friday, including Model at Sonoraville, Pepperell at North Murray, Coosa at Ringgold, and Armuchee at Christian Heritage. Rome will have its annual soap game intrasquad scrimmage. The second week of preseason scrimmages begins on August 10, leading up to the regular season starting on August 18. Some of the opening night matchups include Cass at Rome and Christian Academy of Knoxville at Darlington.

STORY 6: eagles

The Coosa Lady Eagles softball team has a new head coach, Angela Little, and a mostly new roster with a strong focus on building a foundation for the young team. They will be breaking in several new players, including some from the middle school program. The team's two returners, Aubrey Blanton and Mary Klaire Wilson, will provide leadership. The summer program and preseason practices have gone well, focusing on skill development and team bonding. The team's dedication is considered a strength, but they will need to work on gaining confidence. The key to success is celebrating every little success and maintaining a positive attitude despite the challenges of a young team. The season opener is on August 15th against Temple.
