STORY 1: Teen Formally Charged With Vehicular Homicide In Death of 4-year-old

Formal charges were filed against Jacob Andrew Johnston, 18, for hitting and killing 4-year-old Abigail Hernandez outside the Mall of Georgia in March. Johnston faces second-degree vehicular homicide and reckless conduct charges, each carrying up to one year in prison. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson announced the charges, promising to pursue justice fully. The DA's Office decided to charge Johnston after police chose not to, which angered Hernandez's family. An arrest warrant is pending. Austin-Gatson, who recently secured re-election, emphasized that the decision to charge Johnston is not politically motivated but aimed at delivering justice.

STORY 2: Judge Revokes Bond For Man Accused Of 2005 Murder Of Ex-girlfriend

Billy Joe Cook, 57, accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend Leslie Marva Adams in 2005, had his bond revoked for violating bond conditions. Released in February 2019, Cook was barred from firearms, going near Adams’ family, and had a 10 p.m. curfew. Prosecutors cited multiple violations, including attending a New Edition concert past curfew, being found with firearm-related items after a shooting at his home, and visiting a Tampa casino. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin Gatson confirmed Cook’s return to jail and readiness to prosecute. Cook faces multiple murder charges in Adams' death.

STORY 3: No gym, no problem? Majority of Americans get exercise they need without one

A study of 2,000 U.S. adults revealed that 60% believe they can get all necessary exercise without a gym. The average person considers themselves active five times a week and exercises four times weekly, with 54% never going to the gym. Instead, they engage in everyday tasks like walking (74%), taking stairs (60%), yard work (59%), and cleaning (59%) for exercise. The study, commissioned by Nature’s Bounty and conducted by OnePoll, found that 70% of respondents feel healthy, with 87% believing improved physical abilities could enhance their daily lives. Many also see a strong link between diet and physical activity levels.

STORY 6: UGA receives significant funding boost in state budgets

The University of Georgia received significant investments from the state government, including $50 million for a new $100 million building for the UGA School of Medicine, $66 million to restore formula funds to the University System of Georgia, $52 million for employee salary increases, $31.6 million for facility upgrades, and $1.5 million to establish a new Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar position. These allocations aim to advance teaching, research, and service missions, support core operations and academic programs, recognize employee contributions, and enhance UGA's research enterprise. These investments align with state priorities such as health care and STEM education.

STORY 7: UGA study: The consequences of 'stress bragging'

New research from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business reveals that individuals who boast about their stress levels are perceived as less competent and less likable by their coworkers. This behavior, termed "stress bragging," creates a negative perception among colleagues and can lead to higher levels of personal stress and burnout. The study found that stress bragging contributes to a workplace culture where chronic stress is normalized, leading to a contagious effect of stress among coworkers. Importantly, discussing stress in passing or being perceived as stressed did not generate the same negative reactions. The takeaway is for employees to reconsider boasting about their stress levels, as it may have detrimental effects on themselves and their coworkers, while managers should be aware of and address this behavior in the workplace.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.
