STORY 1: Two charged with armed robbery, waitress remains 'person of interest'

A man in Madison alleges he was robbed at gunpoint of nearly $9,000, involving a Waffle House waitress who remains a "person of interest." The victim and the waitress agreed to go to a motel where he was robbed while waiting in her vehicle. Officer Andy Koth arrested the suspects following a traffic stop. The waitress later returned to the Waffle House parking lot, handed the victim $100, and was found with a bag of suspected marijuana. She claimed the victim got into her car without permission, stating, "I just lost my job, he had the money, and I gotta do what I gotta do." The suspects were charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a crime. The waitress allegedly attempted to hang herself the next day and was taken to a mental health facility.

STORY 2: Conyers to Sell Surplus Property

The Conyers City Council has unanimously voted to declare a .05-acre property owned by the city as surplus for sale. The property, located behind Las Flores Olde Town Mex restaurant on Main Street, serves as a parking lot accommodating about three vehicles. City Attorney Carrie Bootcheck noted that the property is not devoted to any specific public purpose, and the city has no use for it. Mayor Vince Evans mentioned that there is interest in the property from potential buyers. Since the vote was unanimous, there will be no second reading of the ordinance before the sale proceeds.

STORY 3: Turner takes first at South Metro wrestling tournament

Morgan County Bulldogs Wrestlers participated in the South Metro tournament, with varsity competitions at Ola High School and JV at Locust Grove. Varsity standout Caleb Turner secured first place at 215 pounds, while other placers included Paul Bessette (3rd at 132 pounds) and Christopher Morgan (5th at 190). Six wrestlers made the podium at 6th place: Jarrett Standard (106), Harrison Jackson (113), and Tripp Davis (175). The JV team excelled with four champions: Jatavious Ward, Jordan Gordon, Braxton Bragg, and Kaleo Wilcoxson. The team heads to Gainesville this Wednesday and hosts the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 16.

STORY 4: Effort to Recall Newton Commission Chairman Marcello Banes Fails

The effort to gather signatures for a petition to force a special election to remove Newton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Marcello Banes from office has failed. Newton County resident Susan Jackson applied for the petition, citing allegations related to Banes' personal businesses and alleged misuse of county funds. Although she collected the initial 100 required signatures, she fell short of the 23,698 signatures (30% of registered voters eligible in 2020) required within the 45-day timeframe. Banes, currently in his second term, announced his bid for re-election to a third term earlier this month.

STORY 5: Georgia Audubon going the way of the dodo as bird enthusiasts distance themselves from enslaver’s name

The Georgia Audubon, an organization dedicated to bird protection, has rebranded to "Birds Georgia" amid controversy over its former namesake, John James Audubon, who was a slaveholder and white supremacist. The move is part of a broader trend of renaming institutions associated with racist figures. The organization's goal remains focused on defending wild birds and their habitats. The decision followed a six-month research and outreach effort by a renaming task force. The move aligns with efforts to promote antiracism in conservation spaces, with other Audubon chapters also undergoing name changes.
