Story 1: Two Teens Killed in Woodstock Crash

In a tragic incident, two teenagers lost their lives following a single-vehicle crash on Towne Lake Parkway near Woodstock. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office responded to the crash, reporting that a Mazda 6 carrying five occupants veered off the road and struck a tree. Gabriel Escandon, 17, from Marietta, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Esteban Cortes-Rendon, 18, from Woodstock, succumbed to injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor. The Cherokee County School District identified Cortes-Rendon as a former student at Etowah High School. The crash is under investigation.

Story 2: Man claims self defense in murder at Madison truck stop

In a murder trial in Morgan County, defense attorney Pete Theodocion argued that Charles Corbitt, facing malice murder charges, shot and killed Taylor Dickens during a child custody exchange to protect himself from serious bodily harm. The incident occurred at a Pilot Truck Stop in June, where Corbitt shot Dickens four times, resulting in his death. The defense claimed Corbitt acted in self-defense, emphasizing that Dickens was aggressive and unhinged. District Attorney Wright Barksdale argued that Corbitt came with ill intent, pointing to text messages referencing a previous exchange where weapons were involved. The trial continues with witness testimonies.

Story 3: Celebrate Martin Luther King Day At Children's Museum of Atlanta

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is hosting special events inviting visitors to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy. Families can follow in Dr. King's footsteps, learning about his leadership in civil and environmental rights movements, building bridges, and hearing his dream for America. Kid Creator programs include activities like building hero robots, painting self-portraits, and exploring the world of germs. The museum's Morph Gallery will feature new visuals and programming, and CMA Onstage will present a birthday dance party and performances inspired by Dr. King's words. Other activities include an inventions scavenger hunt and more.

Story 4: Gov. Brian Kemp not ready to move on tort reform this year

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated that tort reform in the state would be a more prolonged process than initially expected, requiring more than one legislative session to achieve meaningful changes. Kemp aims to introduce legislation to stabilize the insurance market, premiums, and level the legal playing field in courtrooms. Tort reform has been a recurring topic, with Kemp highlighting the impact of frivolous lawsuits on Georgia business owners and job creation. The last major tort reform legislation in Georgia was in 2005, and Kemp seeks to address issues that have arisen since then. The Governor also outlined plans for utilizing a $16 billion budget surplus to increase spending in various critical areas.

Story 5: Police: Inmate Tried To Smuggle Two Pounds Of Tobacco Into Prison

Inmate Michael Joseph Otting at Floyd County Prison faces felony charges for attempting to smuggle two pounds of tobacco into the prison. Otting allegedly arranged for Darin Porter to place the tobacco in a garbage can at Rotary Memorial Park. However, investigators intercepted the tobacco, leading to Otting's arrest. He is charged with felony possession of unauthorized items. Otting is currently held in Floyd County Jail without bond.

Story 7: Three Cobb Schools Identified as Underperforming by State

Three Cobb County School District schools, City View Elementary School in Mableton, Cobb Horizon High School, and Brumby Elementary School in Marietta have been identified by Georgia's Department of Education as underperforming and in need of additional support. The schools are flagged for various reasons, including falling in the bottom 5% of the state, having a graduation rate at or below 67%, and having consistently underperforming student groups. The identification is part of the nationwide Every Student Succeeds Act, aiming to assess and target ways to improve education outcomes for students in identified schools.
