STORY 1: Woman in Critical Condition After Alleged Attack By Son In Buckhead

A 24-year-old man from Buckhead, Georgia, is in custody after allegedly severely beating his 59-year-old mother on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at their home on Apalachee Woods Trail. The woman was found covered in blood in the backyard, and a neighbor called 911 after checking on her. Law enforcement arrived at the scene, established a protective perimeter, and secured the area. The victim was transported to Morgan Medical Center and later to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The suspect, Dion Turner, was arrested without incident at the residence. He is facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.

STORY 2: Gang member gets 17-year-plus sentence on gun charge

A member of the Gangster Disciples was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm linked to a domestic violence assault using ATF’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). Megail Thirkield, 34, of Columbus, was sentenced to 210 months in prison and five years of supervised release for pleading guilty to firearm possession by a convicted felon. He was not eligible for parole. The firearm was found when Thirkield was arrested for domestic violence charges in Columbus. It was linked to multiple domestic violence incidents through NIBIN, an interstate automated ballistic imaging network used for criminal investigations.

STORY 3: Georgia Court of Appeals clears way for drug rehab facility at old Morgan Memorial hospital

The Georgia Court of Appeals has resolved a long-standing dispute over the old Morgan Memorial Hospital property in Madison, Georgia. The court reversed two key rulings by the Morgan County Superior Court, determining that the Morgan County Hospital Authority is exempt from the city's zoning ordinances and that a drug rehabilitation facility is an appropriate use for the property. This decision clears the way for the hospital authority to secure a buyer for the property. The city had opposed the hospital authority's plans to sell the property without requiring a conditional use permit. The hospital authority intends to reinvest the proceeds into healthcare services for the community.

Story 4: Discussions Continue on Expansion of Rockdale County Board of Commissioners

A proposed bill, House Bill 741, aimed at expanding the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners from three to five seats and introducing a county manager for day-to-day operations, has sparked discussions among Rockdale County residents. During a recent town hall meeting, residents expressed interest in splitting the bill into two or three separate bills, addressing the expansion of the board, the form of government, the formation of an independent board of ethics, and the hiring of a full-time ethics officer. The goal is to provide better representation for the county's growing population. State Rep. Dar’shun Kendrick indicated that the bill may undergo revisions based on citizen feedback before the legislative session begins.

Story 5: Conyers Approves EV Battery Repair Facility

The Conyers City Council has approved a Special Use Permit (SUP) for Cox Automotive Mobility to establish a facility for diagnosing, storing, and remanufacturing lithium-ion batteries at 2084 Lake Industrial Court in the Quigg Branch Business Park. The facility will focus on prolonging the life of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, reducing the need for new battery production. Batteries needing service will be shipped to the Conyers location, diagnosed, and repaired, with any unusable batteries sent for recycling. The facility is expected to create up to 70 jobs with salaries ranging from $50,000 to six figures. Concerns about safety and inspections were addressed, with the company emphasizing safety protocols and working with local fire departments.
