STORY 1: Young boy found dead in Peachtree Corners apartment

In Peachtree Corners, Georgia, a tragic incident unfolded as officials investigated an apartment fire. A 6-year-old boy, found unresponsive during the investigation, had been stabbed multiple times and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Gwinnett County Police Department and Gwinnett County Fire Department were initially called to the scene following a report of an apartment fire. However, first responders discovered the boy inside the apartment with multiple stab wounds. A woman found behind the building was taken into custody, and detectives are investigating her involvement. The victim's name and the motive for the crime are being withheld, and the investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

STORY 2: Buford Corn Maze Offers 'Wholesome' Entertainment During Halloween Season

The Buford Corn Maze in Georgia has been providing fall fun for families for 15 years, offering more than just a corn maze. Visitors can enjoy various attractions including the bubble barn, a farmer's combine slide, an animal viewing area, a hayride, a pumpkin patch, pony rides, and the spooky Haunted Forest. The farm, co-owned by Rodney and Kendra Miller and Jerome and Tina Beggs, is open from Labor Day until the second week of November, with extended hours during October. The Haunted Forest is a unique feature, with its presentation changing every year. Admission prices vary, with combination tickets available. The corn maze averages about 60,000 visitors annually.

STORY 3: Añejo

A new restaurant called Añejo, offering contemporary Mexican cuisine with a "South Beach feel," is set to open in downtown Lawrenceville. The restaurant is located on the Historic Lawrenceville Square on the second floor of 165 North Perry St. Añejo plans to open in early November and will provide unique contemporary Mexican dishes, along with handcrafted cocktails. The owners also have plans to develop the first floor of the building and open another restaurant next year, with a sushi restaurant being among the considered concepts. This addition aims to diversify the culinary offerings in the area.

STORY 4: LAKO: Are you prepared for the tax implications of your retirement savings?

Many retirees with substantial 401(k) savings may not realize that their balance isn't equal to its value in the distribution phase. Taxes play a significant role in diminishing the effective value of their savings. When retirees need to withdraw $1.30 for every $1 they spend due to taxes, their retirement funds won't last as long as expected. Taxes on Social Security and other sources of income can further erode savings. It's essential to have diversified tax status savings, including after-tax savings in Roth IRAs, brokerage accounts, and tax-deferred savings. Diversification allows flexibility in managing taxes during retirement, ensuring more efficient and long-lasting financial security.

STORY 5: Editorial: Civilian casualties part of the plan for Hamas terror

Early news reports regarding an explosion at a Gaza hospital, where hundreds were killed, are being scrutinized. U.S. intelligence suggests that the explosion resulted from a rocket launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group that went off prematurely. Evidence points towards a ground explosion rather than an airstrike. Israel released an audio recording capturing Hamas operatives discussing the blast. While civilian casualties in war are tragic, Israel takes steps to minimize them, while its enemies often use civilians as shields and promote civilian deaths for propaganda purposes. This strategy of pushing Israel to harm Palestinians has been ongoing for two decades. Israel's right to defend itself is contrasted with Hamas's goal of killing innocents.

Break 3: BOO FEST & HARVEST FEST – INGLES 6

STORY 6: AI identifies potential new treatment for brittle bone disease

Artificial intelligence technology has identified the antimalarial drug dihydroartemisinin (DHA), derived from traditional Chinese medicine, as a potential treatment for osteoporosis. Researchers used a deep learning algorithm to screen for molecules that could treat osteoporosis by focusing on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). In mice, DHA effectively reversed osteoporosis-related bone loss and preserved bone structure. It was administered using DHA-loaded nanoparticles. This research offers a promising therapeutic approach for osteoporosis by reprogramming BMMSCs to produce more osteoblasts, the cells responsible for building new bone. Osteoporosis affects millions of elderly people, and DHA presents a new potential treatment.

STORY 7: PRUNE

As the weather turns cooler and winter approaches, many people are busy preparing their yards. Common tasks include winterizing mechanical yard equipment, changing planters or bringing them indoors, and raking leaves. However, when it comes to pruning woody ornamentals and trees, the timing is critical. Pruning in the fall is not recommended because the cuts made during this season stimulate new growth, which may not have enough time to harden off before winter. This can lead to winter damage and limit flourishing in the spring. Pruning for desired shape or long-term health is better done in the dead of winter when plants are dormant or in early spring after flowering. It's important to understand the specific needs of your plants and consider consulting your local Extension office for guidance.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.
